What is a gasoline direct injection (GDI) engine?
An engine that directly injects fuel into the cylinder is called gasoline direct injection (GDI) engine. Another fuel injection type is the port injection method. (PI) This port injection method injects fuel and air mixture into the cylinder through the intake ports.
Each injection type has pros and cons. Some vehicles use both direct injection and port injection as well to overcome cons of GDI.
The advantage of the GDI direct injection engine is more power from smaller engines with less fuel and less emissions as well. Well, at least above benefits are valid in low mileage GDI engine.
The biggest disadvantage of the direct injection GDI engine includes carbon in and around the valve, intake ports, PCV hoses, consumes oil, and a number of side effects.
