Car computer is injecting too much fuel into the engine room.

P0171 means that engine is running lean with unmetered air flowing into the engine. To compensate this unmetered air, the car computer (ECM, engine control module) injects more fuel into the engine. Running the car with P0171 for long time could damage the catalytic converter and the engine.
