Q. What does engine oil API SP, GF-6, CK-4 mean in engine oil selection and purchase?
What is GF6 engine oil standard?
This is the latest engine oil standard for latest passenger vehicles. GF6 has both GF6-A and GF6-B. GF-6A is backward compatible with the previous standards and covers SAE 0W-20, 5W-20, 0W-30, 5W-30 and 10W-30 viscosity grades. GF6-B is NOT backward compatible and covers SAE 0W-16 viscosity grade only. Therefore, if your car manual says you need engine oil with 0W-16 viscosity then please use 0W-16 viscosity engine oil only.
Engine oil selection and purchase guide
First, refer to your car manual and find the right engine oil specifications. Purchase the fully synthetic engine oil with API SP & GF6 grade with your vehicle's viscosity grade. That is the simplest and best way to select and purchase engine oil. Please refer to the attached photo for the grade marks.
GF6 standard background
GF6, introduced in May 2020, is the newest International Lubricant Specification Advisory Committee (ILSAC) engine oil performance standard. It is designed to offer improved fuel economy, enhance emission control system, improve sludge control, protect against modern turbo charged low-speed pre-ignition (LSPI), protect against timing chain wear, protect high temperature deposit for pistons and improve overall engine performance.
Diesel Engines CK-4, CJ-4, CI-4, CH-4, FA-4
Currently supported CK-4, CJ-4, CI-4, CH-4 and FA-4 categories are for diesel engines only. As always, please first refer to your vehicle manufacturer’s recommendations on oil performance grades. CK-4 was introduced in year 2017 for for use with high-speed four-stroke cycle diesel engines.
