Battery load test

At start-up, the starter motor instantaneously requires several hundred amps of current. Indirectly test whether the battery can supply such current required for starting the car. It should be at least 9.6V. This is for 12V batteries only.
Ensure to avoid battery electricity short.
During the load test, with readily available digital multimeter it is not easy to capture the instantaneous voltage drop. The very moment the car starts, check the voltage on your DMM will drop and jump back up instantaneously.
- The main role of the battery is to supply sufficient current to the starter motor during start-up.
- Although professional equipment should be used, the load testing can be done with a DMM.
- After connecting the DMM, start the engine. The voltage at the very moment of starting must be 9.6V or higher.
- If the very voltage is less than 9.6V, the starting experience may have some issues.
CCA (Cold cranking ampere) means the current required to start the starter motor. Even if the battery voltage is normal, if the CCA current is low, the battery cannot supply enough current to the starter motor causing starting problems.
